Sewage backup cleanup in Durham

A sewage backup gets the top rate on every restoration price sheet, and for good reason. Fixr lists black water cleanup at $7 to $7.50 per square foot, close to double what a clean pipe leak costs, because more has to be thrown away and everything left behind has to be disinfected.

While it is still coming up

  1. Nobody runs water. Not a flush, not the dishwasher, not a shower. With a blocked main, every gallon used upstairs comes out of the lowest drain.
  2. Close the door on the room and keep children and pets on the other side.
  3. Turn the system off if the air handler or a return vent sits near the water, so it doesn't spread the smell and the spray.
  4. Take pictures of the fixture that overflowed and of the floor.
  5. Two calls: a plumber to clear the line, then a restoration company for the room. Clear the line first or it can back up again.

What gets thrown away

Carpet and pad that sewage touched are done; nobody cleans those. Drywall comes out above the stain, and the cavity is disinfected before drying starts. Tile and concrete clean up. Ask the crew to tell you item by item what they are removing and why.

Why Durham lines back up

Look at the age of the house. In ZIP 27701, central Durham, 45% of homes predate 1980 (Census ACS), and many still drain through clay or cast iron laterals. Those crack with age, and the roots of the big shade trees on the older streets find the cracks. Roots plus a few years of grease is the standard recipe for a drain that slows, then stops.

Rural north county has a different version. Most of Bahama and Rougemont is on septic, and a drain field that is already saturated can push effluent back into the house. That happens after runs of heavy rain, and the airport now averages 13.4 days a year with an inch or more.

Insurance

Plenty of homeowners policies exclude sewer and drain backup unless you bought a backup endorsement, so pull out the declarations page before assuming. And if the backup was caused by a flooded creek or river, it falls under flood insurance instead. North Carolina claims, in more detail.

Cost

The $7 to $7.50 rate covers cleaning and disinfecting. Tear-out and rebuilding are added on, and a crawl space under the affected rooms adds square footage fast. Published costs.

Questions Durham homeowners ask

Can I clean up a small sewage backup myself?

If it is a small puddle on bathroom tile and you got to it right away, possibly, wearing boots and gloves and using a disinfectant. If it soaked into carpet or the bottom of a wall, hire it out; you can't disinfect the inside of a material from its surface.

Does homeowners insurance cover a sewage backup?

Frequently only if you added a sewer and drain backup endorsement. Many base policies exclude it. Call your agent before the cleanup starts and take photos regardless.

Is it safe to stay in the house?

When it is confined to one bathroom with the door shut, usually. If it reached bedrooms or living space, got near the HVAC, or someone in the house has a weakened immune system, go somewhere else until the cleanup is finished.
