How long water damage restoration takes

The drying part is short: Fixr says three days or more, and Bob Vila says around 72 hours for most rooms. Getting from the leak to fresh paint takes weeks, and most of those weeks are spent waiting on somebody.

Durham air slows the drying

Dehumidifiers work by pulling water out of the air so the wet wood and drywall give up theirs. In August the air outside Durham is already close to saturated, and the late summer months are also the rainiest. Opening the windows makes it worse. So the house stays shut with the AC running while the meters creep down. Crawl spaces and hardwood are slow. So is the plaster in older central Durham houses, which holds water longer than drywall does.

After a big storm, everyone is in line

A tropical system keeps every restoration crew and adjuster in the Triangle busy at the same time. Chantal in July 2025 generated 43 federal flood insurance claims in Durham County, most along the Eno, and that count leaves out every roof leak and burst pipe that went to homeowners policies instead. Plan on waiting at each stage. Don't let the house sit wet while you wait for the adjuster, though; photograph everything and keep the drying going.

Shaving off days

Call the same day you find the water. Let the crew pull wet pad and soaked drywall early so the wall cavities can breathe. Have the plumber write down what failed, and keep the photos ready for the adjuster. And either hire one company for drying and rebuild, or get the two companies talking before the first one leaves.

Questions Durham homeowners ask

How long does water restoration take?

Fixr says drying takes three days at minimum, and Bob Vila says about 72 hours for most rooms. Putting the house back can add weeks or months, depending on how much came out. Adjuster visits and back-ordered materials stretch it further.

How long do drying fans stay?

Until each material reads normal on the meter, which Fixr puts at three days or longer on most jobs. Ask to see the readings every day so you can watch the numbers fall.

Can I start the repairs before the adjuster comes?

Begin drying and do whatever stops the damage from spreading, with photos as you go. Wait on the rebuild until the adjuster has seen the damage or told you in writing to go ahead.
